Brown trout on an average are on the smaller side this year with a bigger one here and there mixed in. For now flows in the Oak are moderate or optimistically almost medium and mostly clear. Water color has improved to about 1 plus feet of visibility. The beast was part of a triple. Be aware the east side Oak Orchard River Point Breeze boat launch is closed for construction (new ramp) so just go the west side launch.. Fishing pressure has been light over the past couple days thanks to the snow storm but guys should be getting back out there and breaking some trails. Both kings and Cohos are being caught. In the Steelhead Division, Karen Mang of East Concord, NY is top fish catcher with a 16-pound, 12-ounce Olcott fish. Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. Darker and some old moldy salmon are still around. Not surprising since it was a real gloomy overcast wet kind of day that you would expect good fish movement. Temps are forecast to begin to cool down for the end of this week and thru the weekend. A decent pair of polarized glasses should reveal pods of fish holding around gravel spots. Recent precipitation for now probably not enough to keep flows any higher then low-ish when Canal water is ended. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. No serious snow accumulations expected with highs in the 40sF. Some crimson males and brighter hens are what anglers are finding nearer the dam and also in the overflow channel. Cover lots of water and get the drift down and slow and you could find a chromer! Flows in the other area smaller tribs are low and mostly clear with some icey conditions. That may be a result of the good flows bringing in those steelhead. So for now, flows in the Oak have dropped back to low and clear. Fishing out deep has been hit and miss and no real pattern of lures to speak of. Nice big fresh King drifting action on the backside of high flows from end of Sept rains. The other area smaller tribs have good looking med and slightly stained flows for now and likewise should be dropping back toward mod or lower and clearer. Fishing pressure not bad, as mentioned above we may be in a bit of a lull between ending salmon efforts and starting brown trout efforts. Not big numbers of steelhead but a few that likely came in on the previous higher flows we had and are a good portent to upcoming steelhead action in the more traditional February or March timeframe. At least in the turbine channel we can look for some of those fish that wont be taking an overland route, to drop back downstream filling in the fast water gravel sections. Plenty of salmon are spawning now in the higher flows and some of the post spawn zombies will be flushed out along with lots of other weeds and debris. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Its unclear if these lower flows will hang on, more then likely with temps rebounding thru this mid week that flows will rebound some with a little more stain. Early fish always tend to head to the dam as it has the most oxygen and they are hoping to go farther upstream to cooler waters. There are still Kings around, about in a one qtr green fish to three qtr old moldy ratio. Temps are forecast on a slow warmup over the next few days thru mid and end next week with another chance at precip later next week. That should make for cleaner drifts, although with a late leaf fall, look for continued usually daily water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations. Anglers at the dam are getting their steelhead hook ups, including a few nice fish. Downstream spots on the Oak for the past weekend may have been tougher on what was dropping and clearing flows, although we did not hear from many guys. Another chance of precipitation for begin part of upcoming weekend although at this point the greater impact is forecasted south of the area. One guy catches a fish, another guy quick runs the fish over to the turbine channel cradled in a net. It looks like some of the weather we missed out on thru the earlier winter is coming now in the later winter. Over all though, the brown trout action on the Oak is tough. The forecast after the warmup for the end of week/beginning part of the weekend is back to cold temps with snow on the backside of the rain so the up and down, 2 3 day cycle will continue. Warmer temps here tempered some by cooling lake breezes. In early November and early December, all Lake Ontario tributaries (Eighteenmile, Johnson, Oak Orchard, Sandy and Salmon Creeks) will see higher flows. Thanks to this forecast, flows in the Oak and other area smaller tribs will be (again) on the way to high, blown and dirty. For the Oak, this latest spate of water should bring on the bulk of the King action with some spawning underway no doubt under the cover of the higher and dirtier water flows. Hopefully they can move to and get in and out of the smaller area tribs that they are dredging next with minimal impact on salmon and trout migrations. The derby ends on Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Good case for earlier season catch and release and reasonable creel limits Point Breeze Oak action March 2020. On select evenings, Ive seen a few fish crashing too like at the Bridges. This latest rise in flows and continued cool down should kick off better brown trout migrations in the Oak setting up good drifting chances into November and maybe into December with reasonable weather hanging in.
